Is UC Davis or UC Irvine better for nursing?

The biggest practical tradeoff is program structure: UC Irvine has a direct-entry Bachelor of Science in Nursing, while UC Davis does not offer a traditional undergraduate nursing major in the same way. If your goal is to study nursing as your major from the start and move through a clear prelicensure path, Irvine is the much more straightforward option. Davis is a strong university with excellent health-related fields, but for an undergrad who specifically wants nursing, the academic pathway is simply not as direct.

That matters more than brand name here, because your day-to-day experience in nursing depends on access to nursing faculty, cohort structure, simulation and clinical training, and a curriculum designed for RN preparation.

UC Davis is very strong in medicine, public health, biological sciences, and health research, and it has a highly respected medical center. But that does not automatically make it the better undergraduate choice for someone who wants nursing as a major. In practice, many students interested in healthcare at Davis pursue adjacent paths rather than a direct BSN route.

So if the question is which school is better for nursing as a major, UC Irvine is the clearer answer. Davis may be excellent overall and may appeal more for campus culture or other health-related interests, but Irvine offers the stronger and more relevant undergraduate nursing experience.
