Penn State or Ohio State for pre med: which is the better choice?

Ohio State has a slight edge for pre med because its medical ecosystem is larger and more integrated, with a major academic medical center, extensive research infrastructure, and a very broad range of hospitals, labs, and clinical settings tied to one campus. That usually translates into more built-in options for shadowing, volunteering, research, and specialty exposure without needing to leave the university environment. Penn State is still a solid pre med choice, but Ohio State tends to offer more sheer volume and variety in the experiences med school applicants need.

One important difference is access to clinical opportunities. Ohio State students are connected to the Wexner Medical Center and a large healthcare network in Columbus, which makes it easier to find patient-facing roles, hospital volunteering, and physician shadowing across many specialties. Penn State students at University Park have opportunities too, but the main undergraduate campus is not as tightly centered around a large academic medical complex in the same way.

Research is another separator. Ohio State has a very large research footprint across biology, neuroscience, public health, biomedical engineering, and medicine, so pre meds have many possible entry points into labs. Penn State also does serious research and can be especially attractive if you want a classic Big Ten college-town setting with strong science departments, but for medically adjacent research, Ohio State is often more convenient and expansive.

Location matters more than people expect. Columbus gives Ohio State students access to a major city with multiple healthcare organizations and public health settings, which helps when you need sustained clinical involvement over several years. Penn State’s State College environment can feel more self-contained, and some students find that they need to be more proactive to build the same depth of off-campus medical exposure.

The main reason to pick Penn State instead would be cost, honors support, or a campus environment where you feel more confident you can earn a very high GPA. For pre med, that piece matters a lot, so if Penn State is meaningfully cheaper or feels like the place where you would thrive academically, that can outweigh Ohio State’s opportunity advantage.
