Is the University of Maryland worth the money compared with George Washington University for undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is paying a premium for GW’s downtown D.C. setting and day-to-day access to internships versus paying much less for Maryland and getting a larger, more traditional university with strong academics and recruiting. For most undergraduates, Maryland is the better financial value because it has a broad national reputation, strong programs across many majors, and close enough proximity to Washington that students can still reach internships and federal opportunities. GW’s main advantage is not that it is broadly more academically powerful than Maryland, but that its location is built into daily student life in a way Maryland cannot fully match.

That matters most for students in fields like political science, international affairs, public policy, journalism, and some nonprofit or government-facing paths. At GW, being in the city can make internships during the semester easier and can shape the whole undergraduate experience. The campus culture is also more urban and independent, which some students strongly prefer over Maryland’s classic Big Ten environment in College Park.

But if the price gap is large, Maryland is usually the smarter undergraduate investment. Maryland has especially strong options in areas like business, engineering, computer science, public policy, and the sciences, plus a bigger campus ecosystem, more school spirit, and often better overall value for the cost. You are not cut off from D.C. there, and plenty of Maryland students build impressive internship resumes, especially with planning.

In practice, GW is worth the extra money only if the cost increase is manageable for your family without major debt and if you know you will truly use the D.C. location as part of your education. If the extra cost would create real financial strain, Maryland is the choice I would make for undergrad. The payoff from GW is real but usually too situational to justify a much higher price when Maryland is already such a solid and respected option.
