Which is a better return on investment: Cal Poly or the University of Virginia?

I’m trying to compare these two schools from a cost vs. outcome perspective rather than just overall prestige. I’m mainly looking at how the degree value, job prospects, and starting salary potential might balance out the total cost of attendance.

Since both schools seem strong in different ways, I want to understand which one tends to give students a better return on investment overall.

Cal Poly often comes out ahead on return on investment, especially for California residents and especially in engineering, computer science, architecture, and other applied fields. For many students, that combination of lower debt and solid early-career outcomes is hard to beat.

Cost is the biggest differentiator. Even if both schools lead to strong jobs, the cheaper path often produces the better ROI simply because you keep more of the payoff instead of using it to cover loans.

Career outcomes also break a bit by field. Cal Poly is especially well positioned for direct pipelines into industry roles, particularly in technical majors where employers value practical experience and recruiting ties. UVA does very well too, but more of its edge shows up in fields like business, consulting, finance, policy, and pre-law pathways, where its national brand and alumni network can carry extra weight.

Geography matters more than people sometimes expect. Cal Poly has especially strong employer recognition in California and the broader West Coast, which is valuable if you want to build a career there. UVA’s network is broader and often especially powerful on the East Coast, so its payoff can rise if you plan to work in places like Washington, D.C., New York, or the Mid-Atlantic.

Degree value depends on your major, but from a pure cost-versus-earnings lens, Cal Poly is often the cleaner financial play. UVA can absolutely justify its price in the right circumstances, particularly for students entering business-oriented fields where the school’s network is a real asset.
