In hiring, that means Stanford tends to open more doors automatically, but Cal Poly can still be taken very seriously, especially for traditional engineering roles and especially on the West Coast.

If the question is strictly “which degree is more respected by employers,” Stanford is the clearer answer. Its engineering school has exceptional visibility, deep research strength, and one of the strongest alumni networks in tech, startups, and engineering leadership. Recruiters everywhere know the name, and it tends to signal both academic selectivity and high upside.

Cal Poly’s reputation is different, not weak. It is well known for producing engineers who can contribute quickly because of its project-based, applied approach. Many employers, particularly in California, actively like Cal Poly engineers for that reason. In some industry settings, especially for undergraduate-focused hiring, a Cal Poly student with strong internships and project experience may look more job-ready than a student from a more theoretical program.
