Purdue or Maryland for city life: which one feels more urban and accessible to nearby cities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Maryland gives you direct access to a major metro area, while Purdue is much more of a classic college-town experience with smaller nearby cities. The University of Maryland sits in College Park, so getting into Washington, DC is straightforward without needing a car. Purdue is in West Lafayette, and while the campus has plenty happening and Lafayette is next door, it does not feel urban in the same way and city access is far less seamless.

If “realistic to get into a city pretty easily” is a top priority, Maryland is the clearer answer. You can reach DC for internships, museums, restaurants, concerts, and neighborhoods with regular public transit, which changes daily life in a meaningful way. College Park itself is suburban rather than fully urban, but it is connected to a true major city in a way Purdue simply is not.

Purdue’s setting is more self-contained. West Lafayette and Lafayette offer restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and local events, so it is not isolated, but the surrounding area feels much smaller and more regional. Indianapolis and Chicago are possible trips, but they are more occasional destinations than places most students naturally fold into everyday life.

In terms of overall urban feel, Maryland will come across as more accessible, more connected, and closer to what most students mean by “city life.” Purdue can be a very active campus socially, but that energy comes from the university community rather than from easy integration with a nearby major city.
