Is Harvard located in New York?

I'm starting my college search and I'm a little confused about the locations of some famous schools. I thought Harvard was in New York, but my friend said that's not right.

Can anyone clear up for me where exactly Harvard is located? I keep mixing it up with some other schools. Also, does being close to NYC affect how students experience college there?

I appreciate any insight since geography is not my strong suit!

Harvard is actually located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, not in New York. Cambridge is just across the Charles River from Boston, making it a part of the Greater Boston area. The confusion is common because so many well-known universities are clustered in the Northeast, but Harvard is definitely not in New York.
