Is Case Western harder to get into than Purdue?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Case Western and Purdue are selective in different ways: Case Western is a smaller private university with a more holistic, institution-wide admissions process, while Purdue’s difficulty can vary a lot by major because some programs, especially engineering and computer science, are much tougher to enter than Purdue overall. So there is not one simple across-the-board answer unless you specify the Purdue program.

In broad terms, Case Western is often viewed as harder to get into overall as a university. Its applicant pool is strong across the board, and because it is smaller, admissions can feel tighter at the institutional level. Purdue, by contrast, has a larger undergraduate population and a wider range of selectivity depending on the college or major.

That said, for highly sought-after Purdue programs like engineering, first-year engineering, or CS, Purdue can be just as hard or harder than Case Western for that specific path. A student applying undecided or to a less selective Purdue major may face a different level of competition than someone applying to one of Purdue’s flagship STEM programs.

So the clearest way to think about it is this: if you mean Purdue overall, Case Western is often considered the tougher admit. If you mean Purdue engineering or another top-demand STEM program, the comparison gets much closer and may tilt toward Purdue being more difficult in that major-specific context.

For building your list, I would not treat them as interchangeable in selectivity. Case Western belongs in the more consistently selective bucket across majors, while Purdue needs to be judged based on the exact program you plan to apply to.
