Case Western vs Carnegie Mellon for undergraduate research opportunities

I’m trying to decide between Case Western and Carnegie Mellon and one of the biggest factors for me is research as an undergrad. I want a place where it’s realistically possible to get involved early, not just in my junior or senior year.

I’m especially interested in how easy it is to find faculty research positions, lab openings, or other hands-on opportunities at each school.

For early undergraduate research, Case Western often gives students a more accessible path, especially if your priority is getting into a lab quickly and having a large surrounding research ecosystem. The opportunities are excellent, and undergrads absolutely do get involved early, but in the most in-demand areas you may need to be more strategic and persistent. At CMU, it often helps to build relationships through classes, office hours, and project-based coursework before landing the role you want.

If your definition of research includes formal programs, summer funding, and faculty-led technical projects, both schools deliver. The difference is often in the texture of access. Case can be easier for a first-year student who wants sheer volume of potential labs and less of a bottleneck around a few famous departments. CMU can be especially rewarding for a student who already knows their niche and wants to work in a very focused, fast-moving research culture.

If you want the most realistic odds of finding something early across many labs, especially in health, bio, or interdisciplinary science, Case has a slight edge. If your interests are more concentrated in CMU’s standout technical areas and you are ready for a more competitive search, Carnegie Mellon can be the more exciting research environment.
