Its tuition is much lower than Colgate’s sticker price, and UMass has strong outcomes in fields like business, computer science, engineering, and public health where employers tend to care more about skills, internships, and experience than about attending a small private college. Colgate can absolutely pay off, but it tends to make the most financial sense when its aid package brings the cost much closer to UMass or when you specifically want the kind of opportunities that come with a small, highly resourced liberal arts college.

UMass Amherst makes the most sense for a student who wants to keep debt down while still having access to a large university’s academic breadth, recruiting pipelines, and alumni network.
