Which is better for small class access: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Dartmouth?

Dartmouth is the clearer choice if your priority is small, discussion-based classes and easier day-to-day access to professors. It is a much smaller undergraduate-focused school, and that shows up in the classroom experience: more seminars, fewer very large lecture courses, and a culture where faculty interaction is a central part of the academic model. UIUC absolutely has strong departments and smaller upper-level classes, but its size means many students, especially early on, will encounter larger lectures and more layers between themselves and professors.

At Dartmouth, the teaching environment is built around close faculty contact. Intro courses can still be sizable, especially in popular subjects, but the overall structure makes it easier to know professors personally, attend office hours regularly, and move into small seminars sooner.

UIUC can still work well for a student who wants small classes, but you usually have to seek them out more intentionally. In some majors, especially in engineering, computer science, and other high-demand fields, large introductory courses are common.
