For computer science, how does University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign compare to Stanford in prestige?

I’m a high school junior trying to understand how much school name matters for computer science. UIUC and Stanford both come up a lot when people talk about strong CS programs, but I’m not sure how employers and graduate schools usually view them relative to each other.

I’m mainly asking about overall prestige in CS, not specific classes or application details.

In computer science, both UIUC and Stanford carry serious prestige, and nobody in the field would see UIUC as an unknown or second-tier option. Stanford has the broader all-around name recognition, especially outside tech, while UIUC has a particularly strong reputation among people who know CS well. For employers and grad programs in computer science, UIUC is absolutely viewed as a top program, even though Stanford still has the more globally recognizable brand.

Stanford tends to matter most for the student who wants maximum brand power across industries, countries, and adjacent fields like startups, venture-backed tech, or elite cross-disciplinary spaces. Its name opens doors very quickly because people far beyond computer science know it, and that broad prestige can carry extra weight in situations where the reviewer is not deeply familiar with CS departments.

UIUC fits the student who cares specifically about how the school is regarded inside computing. In CS circles, UIUC has a long-established reputation for technical strength, deep faculty, strong research, and producing highly capable engineers. Many recruiters at major tech companies know UIUC extremely well, so for software engineering and technical recruiting, it is often treated with a level of respect that is much closer to Stanford than many high school students realize.

For graduate school, Stanford’s name is powerful, but PhD and research-oriented master’s admissions care a lot about research experience, recommendation letters, and academic performance. A top student at UIUC with strong faculty relationships and research can be just as competitive as a top student from Stanford. The school name helps, but in CS, measurable work tends to matter a lot.

So in pure prestige terms, Stanford is still the bigger overall brand. But within computer science, UIUC is elite enough that the gap is much smaller than it looks from the outside, especially for employers and academics who actually know the field.
