Is the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Emory better for accounting careers?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Emory and want to focus on accounting recruiting and career outcomes. I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m more interested in which one gives a better path into accounting jobs after college.

I’m mainly looking at things like recruiting access, internship opportunities, and how well the school is regarded by accounting firms.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC has a much more established, visible pipeline into accounting, while Emory gives you a strong overall brand and Atlanta access but is less specifically dominant in accounting recruiting. For accounting careers, especially public accounting and Big Four pathways, UIUC is the safer and more direct option. Its Gies College of Business is especially well known among firms, and the accounting major has long been one of the school’s standout professional tracks.

UIUC tends to offer deeper on-campus recruiting volume for accounting, more classmates headed into the same field, and a larger alumni base inside major accounting firms. That matters because accounting hiring is often very relationship- and pipeline-driven. When a school is already a familiar stop for firms year after year, students usually benefit from more predictable access to info sessions, internships, and full-time interviews.

Emory still places students well, particularly because of its strong reputation, selective student body, and location in Atlanta. If you want to work in Atlanta after graduation, Emory can be very appealing, and firms in that market know the school well. But Emory is not as singularly known for undergraduate accounting in the same way UIUC is, so the recruiting path can feel less like a built-in machine.

Another practical point is scale. At UIUC, there is simply more accounting infrastructure: more specialized faculty presence, more peers targeting CPA-oriented roles, and a stronger sense that firms come expecting to hire accountants. At Emory, you may get excellent opportunities, but the accounting ecosystem is not usually the main reason students choose the school.

If your decision is centered specifically on accounting recruiting and first-job outcomes, UIUC has the clearer edge. Emory becomes more compelling if you value its broader prestige, smaller environment, or Atlanta network enough that those factors outweigh the more established accounting pipeline at Illinois.
