University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs UT Austin for data science: which is better for undergrad?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC tends to offer a more established, computing-heavy environment with very deep recruiting in tech, while UT Austin gives you a top-tier CS-and-math ecosystem in a major city with excellent industry access during the school year. For data science specifically, both schools are strong, but the day-to-day experience can feel different because UIUC is in a classic college town and UT is embedded in Austin’s startup and tech scene. That affects internships, networking, and campus life as much as academics.

At UIUC, the data science path benefits from a long-standing strength in computer science, statistics, and engineering. Employers know the school well, and the campus has a large volume of technical recruiting. If you want a very academic, project-heavy environment where it is easy to find serious peers in computing, UIUC stands out.
