Is CU Boulder or Georgia Tech more prestigious for engineering?

The biggest practical difference is that Georgia Tech has a broader national reputation as a top-tier engineering school, while CU Boulder is very well respected but tends to be especially prominent in certain fields and regions. For internships and first-job recruiting, Georgia Tech usually has the stronger brand recognition across the country. CU Boulder still carries real weight, particularly in aerospace, physics-adjacent engineering areas, and with employers connected to Colorado’s tech and aerospace ecosystem.

In the engineering community, Georgia Tech is more often seen as the more prestigious name overall. Its engineering identity is central to the school, and that shows up in employer familiarity, research visibility, and the volume of companies that recruit there. For graduate school, a strong student from either place can do very well, but Georgia Tech’s name typically travels more easily.

That said, prestige is not identical across every discipline. CU Boulder is especially strong in aerospace engineering and has a serious research presence, including ties to federal labs and the space industry. In some circles, especially aerospace and certain Western U.S. networks, Boulder can be every bit as impressive in practice as schools with bigger general engineering brands.

For future job searches, Georgia Tech is the safer bet if you want the school name itself to signal engineering strength almost anywhere in the U.S. CU Boulder is still an excellent engineering school, but its reputation is a bit less universally dominant outside its strongest specialties.
