Is Santa Clara University or UC Berkeley generally considered more prestigious for college admissions and employers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is broad national and international name recognition versus a strong regional reputation with especially tight Silicon Valley ties. UC Berkeley carries more overall prestige in college admissions and with employers across most fields, largely because it is a globally recognized research university with standout strength in areas like engineering, computer science, business, economics, and the sciences. Santa Clara University is well respected, especially in the Bay Area, and employers often know it for producing polished, career-ready graduates, but its reputation is not as wide-ranging or as powerful overall.

For graduate admissions, Berkeley usually has the stronger signal on a transcript simply because of its academic reputation, research presence, and visibility across disciplines. A Berkeley degree is more likely to be immediately recognized by people outside California, including international employers and universities. That matters if you want your school name to travel well.

For employers, the picture is a little more nuanced than a pure prestige ranking. In Silicon Valley, Santa Clara can do very well because of location, alumni connections, and strong recruiting relationships, especially in business and tech-adjacent roles. But even there, Berkeley tends to have the higher ceiling in terms of brand power and access to elite opportunities, particularly for highly selective firms or grad-school-oriented paths.

So in straight prestige terms, UC Berkeley is the clearer answer. Santa Clara is respected and can open plenty of doors, especially in the Bay Area, but Berkeley is more likely to impress both admissions committees and employers on name alone.
