University of Maryland vs NYU for media careers: which is better for breaking into the industry?

I’m trying to decide between the University of Maryland and NYU, and I want to work in media after college, ideally in something like digital media, journalism, or production.

Both schools seem like they could lead to good opportunities, but I’m not sure which one has the stronger path into media careers overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus cost: NYU places you inside New York’s media ecosystem during the school year, while Maryland can give you a very strong path into journalism and media with easier access to Washington, DC and often a more manageable price. For digital media, journalism, and production, NYU usually offers more day-to-day proximity to internships, freelance work, and alumni across major outlets, studios, and media companies. Maryland, though, has a well-regarded journalism pipeline, strong student media, and real advantages for political reporting, public affairs media, and communications tied to DC.

If your goal is broad media industry exposure, NYU has the edge because location matters a lot in this field. Being in Manhattan makes it much easier to take internships during the semester, attend events, meet working professionals, and build contacts while you are still in school. That is especially useful for digital content, entertainment media, magazine work, and production-adjacent roles where timing and relationships can matter as much as coursework.

Maryland is not a backup option in this area. Its journalism and communications-related opportunities are serious, and student media there has a strong reputation as a training ground. The DC corridor also creates excellent access to reporting, documentary, policy media, nonprofit communications, and broadcast-related work, even if the path may feel a bit less immediate than stepping out into New York every day.

For production specifically, NYU is the more obvious launchpad, especially if you mean film, video, studio, or entertainment-focused work. For journalism, the comparison is closer than people sometimes assume, and Maryland can be extremely compelling if you are interested in news, politics, or public-interest storytelling. For digital media, NYU again benefits from the sheer density of companies and creators around it.

My honest read is that NYU offers the stronger overall runway into media careers, especially if cost is not a major concern and you want to be embedded in the industry from day one. Maryland becomes very attractive if the price difference is significant, because it is fully capable of getting a motivated student into media and can be the smarter decision when debt would limit your flexibility after graduation.
