Is Williams or Barnard more fun for undergrads?

The biggest day-to-day tradeoff is close-knit campus life at Williams versus city-based independence at Barnard. Williams has a very residential, all-in community where a lot of social life happens on campus, students know each other well, and weekends often revolve around campus events, outdoor activities, and house gatherings. Barnard gives you constant access to New York City and the broader Columbia social scene, which can feel exciting and varied, but it also means your fun depends more on how actively you build your own routine.

If by “fun” you mean a strong sense that everyone is in the same place together, Williams often has the edge. It is known for students being very engaged in campus traditions, clubs, performances, and low-key social events, and the small size can make it easier to find your people quickly. People who like spontaneous hangouts, a visible campus community, and a more cohesive undergraduate culture often find Williams happier on a daily basis.

Barnard can be more fun for students who draw energy from movement, choice, and not being limited to campus. You have Barnard’s community, Columbia’s student life, and the city itself, so there is almost always something to do. The downside is that social life can feel more decentralized, and some students experience the city as energizing while others find it a little fragmented or tiring.

In terms of student vibe, Williams is usually seen as warmer, more intimate, and more consistently communal. Barnard tends to feel more self-directed, ambitious, and socially expansive. For pure undergrad happiness and built-in fun, I would give Williams the slight nod. For students who think fun means freedom, variety, and NYC at your doorstep, Barnard can easily feel more enjoyable.
