Is UT Dallas or Rice worth it for STEM majors?

For a STEM student, Rice is usually worth the extra cost only if the price difference is manageable for your family and you want a smaller, more selective environment with closer faculty access and a highly residential campus culture. UT Dallas is often the smarter value choice if cost matters, especially for engineering, computer science, data science, and pre-professional STEM paths where internships, industry connections, and graduating with less debt can matter more than campus prestige. Both can get you strong outcomes, but they feel very different day to day.

Rice fits students who want small classes, easy access to professors, and a campus where undergraduates are deeply integrated into the academic experience. Its residential college system creates a more traditional, close-knit undergraduate community, and STEM students benefit from strong research access plus proximity to the Texas Medical Center and Houston’s engineering, energy, and biotech scenes. For students interested in biomedical engineering, biosciences, chemistry, physics, math, or combining STEM with research and grad school goals, Rice can be especially compelling.

UT Dallas makes a lot of sense for students who want strong STEM training with a practical, career-oriented edge. It has a well-known reputation in Texas for computer science, engineering, and tech-adjacent fields, and its location in the Dallas area helps with internships in technology, telecom, finance, healthcare, and defense-related industries. UTD is also a place where many students are very focused, academically serious, and internship-driven, which can be a real advantage if your goal is to build experience early and efficiently.

The biggest question is whether Rice’s advantages are meaningful enough to justify the cost gap. If Rice would require heavy borrowing, I would lean toward UT Dallas, because STEM success depends much more on what you do with research, internships, projects, and grades than on choosing the most expensive option. If Rice is affordable without major financial strain, then its smaller scale, faculty attention, and undergraduate experience can absolutely make it worth it.
