Is UT Dallas or Boston University worth the cost for undergrad?

For most students, Boston University is not worth taking on a lot more debt if UT Dallas is already a much cheaper option. If your likely path involves fields where skill, grades, internships, and low debt matter a lot, UTD is often the smarter investment.

BU makes more sense for students who specifically want an urban college experience woven into the city itself and who will actively use Boston as part of their education. That can matter for communications, international relations, some social sciences, business, pre-health, and students who want a faster-paced, more externally connected environment. BU also tends to attract students who want a more residential private university feel while still being embedded in a major city.

The key question is not whether BU is better in the abstract, but whether the added cost buys something you will actually use enough to justify years of repayment. If BU would require substantial loans, I would lean strongly toward UT Dallas unless BU offers a specific academic, professional, or personal environment that you know is central to how you want to spend four years. A noticeable cost gap is one of the clearest reasons to choose the less expensive school.
