UT Dallas vs University of South Florida for finance careers: which is better for internships and job placement?

I’m trying to decide between UT Dallas and the University of South Florida, and I’m interested in a finance career after college.

I want to know which school generally gives students better access to finance internships, recruiting, and entry-level job opportunities after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is market access: UT Dallas puts you in the Dallas-Fort Worth business ecosystem, while USF connects you to the Tampa Bay market. For finance specifically, Dallas is usually the deeper and broader recruiting market, with more large corporate offices, stronger pathways into corporate finance, commercial banking, valuation, and some investment-related roles. USF can still work well, especially for students aiming to build a career in Florida, but its finance recruiting footprint is typically more regional.

UT Dallas benefits from being close to a very large concentration of employers, and that matters a lot for internships during the school year. The Naveen Jindal School of Management has a strong business focus, and many students use the location to land roles in corporate finance, FP&A, banking, consulting-adjacent work, and finance rotational programs. Being in DFW also helps with networking because there are simply more nearby firms and more alumni working in business functions.

USF’s Muma College of Business has solid ties in the Tampa area, and Tampa is a real finance market with banks, wealth management firms, insurance, asset servicing, and corporate employers. If you want to stay in Florida after graduation, USF can position you well for local internships and entry-level jobs. The challenge is that the overall volume of finance recruiting and the number of major employers within easy reach is not usually as extensive as what UT Dallas students can tap into in DFW.

For internships and job placement alone, I would give UT Dallas the edge. It is not because USF lacks opportunities, but because UT Dallas offers stronger day-to-day access to a larger business hub and a business school environment that tends to be especially career-oriented. USF makes more sense if your goal is specifically to establish yourself in Florida, but for the broader finance job market and internship density, UT Dallas is the more advantageous option.
