Is William & Mary or Northwestern more prestigious for college admissions and job recruiting?

Northwestern is more widely seen as the more prestigious school overall, especially in national name recognition, graduate school admissions, and broad employer recruiting. It has a stronger national brand, is typically grouped with the most selective private research universities, and draws heavy recruiting in fields like consulting, finance, media, engineering, and pre-med related paths. In most parts of the country, if someone knows both schools, Northwestern will usually carry more immediate prestige.

William & Mary is still a highly respected institution, but its reputation is more concentrated in certain circles, especially the Mid-Atlantic, public service, government, law, history, and undergraduate teaching. It has a long academic reputation and a very loyal alumni network, but it is not usually perceived at the same national prestige tier as Northwestern.
