William & Mary vs Duke for economics: which is better for undergrads?
I’m trying to decide between William & Mary and Duke and economics is the major I’m most likely to pursue. I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m not sure how they compare specifically for an undergraduate econ major.
I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally better for the economics experience itself, including academics and opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and access: Duke gives you a larger, more research-heavy economics ecosystem with stronger national visibility, while William & Mary offers a smaller, more intimate undergraduate experience where econ majors can get close faculty attention more easily. Duke’s economics department is bigger and sits inside a university with extensive policy, business-adjacent, data science, and research connections. William & Mary is well known for strong undergraduate teaching, and that matters a lot in a theory-heavy major like economics.
For the academics and opportunities themselves, Duke has the edge. Its economics program is broader, with more depth in areas like econometrics, finance-related economics, public policy, and quantitative work, and students benefit from the university’s overall recruiting strength.
William & Mary is still an excellent place to study economics, especially if you value discussion-based classes and a campus culture that leans very undergraduate-focused. In many cases, it may be easier there to stand out, build relationships with professors, and take on meaningful roles in research or department life earlier. For a student who learns best in a less pre-professional atmosphere, that can be a real advantage rather than a consolation prize.
If the question is which school is stronger specifically for undergraduate economics, I would give that nod to Duke. It combines a very strong econ department with wider opportunities around it, and that tends to matter over four years. William & Mary remains a very good option, but Duke offers the more powerful overall platform for an econ major.
