For computer science, the University of Washington has the edge overall, especially if your priorities are access to the tech industry, research depth, and name recognition within CS. UW’s program is deeply connected to Seattle’s tech ecosystem, with major employers nearby and a steady flow of internships, part-time roles, and industry events.

The biggest differentiator is location. Being in Seattle puts UW students much closer to companies like Microsoft and Amazon, along with a large network of startups and mid-size tech firms. That matters not just for summer internships, but also for networking, school-year opportunities, and meeting recruiters who already know the program well.

Academically, both schools are strong, but UW tends to stand out more in computer science specifically. Purdue is respected too, especially for its engineering culture and technical rigor, but UW carries more weight in CS circles.

Purdue’s strongest case is value and structure. It is known for a more traditional campus feel, a very solid engineering-driven academic environment, and strong outcomes in computing. Some students also prefer Purdue’s style because it can feel more grounded and less shaped by the pace of a big coastal tech hub.

One practical issue matters a lot here: whether you are directly admitted to the CS major. If you already have a secured place in CS at both schools, UW is the more compelling option for most students focused on computer science.
