Which is better for marketing: University of Washington or Santa Clara University?
I’m trying to decide between University of Washington and Santa Clara University for marketing, and I want to choose the option that would be stronger for a future career in business.
I know both schools have good reputations overall, but I’m mainly looking at which one would be better specifically for a marketing major and related opportunities.

University of Washington is the stronger pick for marketing if you want the broader business platform, a larger alumni network, and access to a major recruiting market through the Foster School of Business in Seattle. Foster is especially well known on the West Coast, and UW’s scale tends to create more student organizations, employer touchpoints, and brand-name internship options. For a future in business, that larger ecosystem matters a lot.
One concrete difference is the business school structure. At UW, marketing sits within Foster, which has a strong overall business reputation and deep ties to companies in Seattle’s tech, retail, and corporate sectors. That can be valuable because marketing careers often overlap with analytics, product, sales, and strategy, and a bigger business school usually gives you more ways to explore those paths.
Another major differentiator is location and recruiting reach. Seattle offers access to a larger metropolitan job market, including major employers and startups where marketing students can find internships in digital marketing, consumer insights, brand strategy, and related fields. Santa Clara has the advantage of being in Silicon Valley, which is excellent for tech, but SCU is usually more regionally scaled and smaller in employer volume than what UW can tap into through Seattle and Foster’s network.
Santa Clara does have real strengths, especially its smaller class environment and closer faculty access. Some students prefer that because it can be easier to build relationships and stand out. But for marketing specifically, I’d lean toward UW because the name recognition of Foster, the size of the business community, and the range of internships and student-led business opportunities give it more momentum for a business career.
