Penn State vs UVA for economics: which is better for an undergrad degree?

I’m trying to decide between Penn State and UVA and want to study economics in college. I keep seeing both schools mentioned as strong options, but I’m not sure which one is generally considered better for an undergraduate economics degree.

I’m mostly interested in which school has the stronger overall reputation for econ and which one might be the better choice for internships or grad school preparation.

For undergraduate economics, UVA is usually viewed as the stronger option overall, especially for reputation, policy-oriented opportunities, and preparation for competitive grad school or finance-consulting recruiting. Its economics department is well regarded, the school has a very strong national academic brand, and Charlottesville’s proximity to Washington, DC helps with policy, research, and internship access. Penn State is still a solid choice, but in head-to-head comparisons for econ specifically, UVA tends to carry more weight.

UVA makes the most sense for a student who wants a more selective academic environment and expects to be surrounded by a lot of peers aiming for consulting, banking, law, public policy, or PhD-track work. The economics major there benefits from a strong liberal arts setting, and students can tap into a campus culture where recruiting for high-demand fields is already well established. That can matter if you want internships during the school year, faculty-connected research, or a cleaner path into top employers and grad programs.

Penn State fits better for a student who wants a large-university experience with broad resources, a big alumni network, and potentially more flexibility if they are still exploring business-adjacent interests. Its economics program is respected and can absolutely lead to strong outcomes, especially for students who are proactive about research, networking, and internships. The scale of Penn State can be a plus if you like having many clubs, employer touchpoints, and course options, but it may take more initiative to stand out.

For pure economics reputation and likely edge in internships and grad school signaling, UVA has the advantage. Penn State becomes more compelling if cost is meaningfully lower or if you strongly prefer its campus environment and size, since those factors can outweigh a moderate academic prestige gap at the undergraduate level.
