Is Purdue or Vanderbilt harder to get into?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Vanderbilt is much more selective overall, while Purdue’s difficulty depends a lot more on the specific major or college you apply to. Vanderbilt has a highly selective private-school applicant pool across the board, whereas Purdue can be reasonably attainable for some programs and much tougher for others, especially engineering, computer science, and other high-demand majors.

So in a realistic admissions sense, Vanderbilt is harder to get into than Purdue for most applicants. If someone says both schools are selective, that is true, but they are not selective in the same way. Vanderbilt tends to be a reach-level school for nearly everyone, while Purdue is better understood as a school where your odds can shift noticeably based on academic profile, residency, and intended major.

The best comparison is not just school versus school, but Vanderbilt overall versus the specific Purdue program you want. Purdue Engineering, for example, can be quite competitive, but Vanderbilt still has the more restrictive admissions environment across the institution. Purdue also admits by college or major more directly than many students realize, which makes broad comparisons less precise.

Another useful difference is applicant behavior. Vanderbilt attracts a very large pool of students with extremely strong grades, coursework, and extracurriculars from all over the country, so the baseline competition is intense. Purdue gets many strong applicants too, especially in STEM, but the selectivity picture is less uniform across campus.
