University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs. University of Maryland for computer science: which is better for undergrad CS?

For undergraduate computer science, UIUC is more often viewed as the higher-powered CS option overall. Its CS program has an especially strong national reputation, deep recruiting from major tech companies, and a long track record of sending students into both top industry roles and strong graduate programs. Maryland is also very well respected, but in head-to-head conversations, UIUC usually carries more weight specifically for CS.

UIUC tends to fit the student who wants to be surrounded by a very large, intensely technical CS culture. Computer science is one of the university’s signature strengths, so there is a lot of course depth, research activity, advanced electives, and peer energy around systems, AI, theory, graphics, and other subfields. Employers know the program well, and that matters when companies are deciding where to invest recruiting time.

Maryland makes more sense for the student who wants a strong CS education with excellent access to the Washington, DC area and its surrounding tech ecosystem. Its location is a real advantage for internships tied to government, defense, cybersecurity, data, and nearby employers in the Mid-Atlantic corridor. The department is respected, and students can do very well from there, especially if they want a campus with proximity to major cities and policy-adjacent opportunities.

If the question is pure CS prestige and program strength, UIUC has the edge. If the question includes setting, access to DC-area opportunities, and wanting a strong but slightly less all-consuming CS environment, Maryland becomes more compelling.

For employers and grad schools, both schools are credible, but UIUC is the one more likely to get an immediate nod as a top-tier CS program. Maryland is not a weak alternative at all, just a different kind of choice: strong, practical, and especially attractive for students who value location as much as department reputation.
