Is Texas A&M worth it compared with NC State for engineering?

For engineering, Texas A&M is often worth choosing over NC State if the cost is reasonably close, mainly because of its scale, recruiting reach, and the depth of its engineering ecosystem.

One big differentiator is recruiting volume and network. Texas A&M’s engineering program feeds into a huge in-state economy and has long-standing pipelines to major employers that hire in large numbers. The Aggie alumni network is also a real factor, not just a slogan, and it can matter for internships, first jobs, and mobility within Texas and beyond.

Another is the breadth of engineering resources. Because the program is so large, A&M offers a wide range of majors, research centers, student project teams, and industry-linked opportunities. That can be a real advantage if you want flexibility, access to specialized labs, or a large peer community in engineering. NC State is also excellent here, especially with its connections in the Research Triangle, but A&M tends to feel bigger and more expansive in engineering-specific infrastructure.

The main reason not to pick Texas A&M is cost and environment. NC State can be the smarter choice if it is meaningfully cheaper for you, especially for an out-of-state student comparing total cost. It also has a more urban, research-triangle-adjacent setting, while Texas A&M is more traditional, larger in school spirit and culture, and located in a classic college-town environment. For many students, NC State delivers engineering outcomes strong enough that a large price gap would be hard to justify.
