For pre-med, that means Tufts often has the edge on nearby hands-on opportunities during the school year, especially in Boston. Middlebury can still prepare students very well academically, but some clinical and research experiences may take more planning because of its rural location.

For classes and core science preparation, both schools are fully capable of getting students to medical school. Middlebury is known for strong teaching and close faculty relationships, which can help with recommendation letters and support in rigorous pre-med courses. Tufts also has strong science departments, but being near Tufts Medical Center and in the Boston area creates a more built-in ecosystem for shadowing, patient-facing work, labs, and public health exposure.

If the question is strictly about preparation plus opportunity for a pre-med student, Tufts is the more advantageous choice overall because the clinical and research access is simply more immediate and abundant. Middlebury is still an excellent option if you strongly prefer a smaller liberal arts setting and are comfortable being proactive about finding medical experiences, especially over summers or school breaks.
