Cal Poly vs University of Minnesota for engineering: which is better for hands-on undergraduate engineering?

I’m trying to decide between Cal Poly and the University of Minnesota for engineering, and I keep seeing both schools mentioned as strong options.

I’m mostly interested in which one is better for a hands-on undergraduate experience and preparing for internships or a first job after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is structure: Cal Poly is built around a very undergraduate, learn-by-doing model from the start, while the University of Minnesota offers the scale, research depth, and breadth of a major public research university. For hands-on undergraduate engineering specifically, Cal Poly usually has the clearer edge because labs, design work, and applied projects are central to its identity, not something you mainly have to seek out through research groups. The difference is that Minnesota gives you a huge toolkit, while Cal Poly more consistently bakes applied work into the default undergraduate experience.

Minnesota may be more appealing if you think you might want a research-heavy environment, broader campus options, or easier access to large-scale university infrastructure.

If your main question is specifically hands-on undergraduate engineering, Cal Poly is the better answer most of the time. Minnesota becomes more compelling when you want the resources and flexibility of a major research university and are comfortable taking more initiative to shape that experience.
