Is Cal Poly or UC Berkeley better for finance careers?
I’m trying to figure out which school would be the better choice if I want to go into finance after college. I know Berkeley has a stronger overall reputation, but Cal Poly seems really hands-on and practical.
I’m mainly wondering which one tends to be better for landing finance-related internships and jobs and building the right network.

For finance careers, UC Berkeley usually gives you the stronger platform, especially for competitive paths like investment banking, asset management, equity research, and high-finance roles in the Bay Area and beyond.
That matters most if you want access to larger on-campus recruiting ecosystems and a school name that opens more first-round looks. At Berkeley, students aiming for finance often benefit from proximity to San Francisco, a large pool of finance-focused peers, and a campus culture where recruiting for selective business and finance roles is very active.
Cal Poly can make a lot of sense for a student who wants a practical, applied undergraduate experience and is comfortable being more self-directed about finance recruiting. Its learn-by-doing approach is real, and students can absolutely place into finance jobs, especially in corporate finance, accounting-adjacent roles, commercial banking, financial planning, operations finance, and some investment roles.
Cal Poly is especially appealing for someone who values a more hands-on, less theoretical environment and may want a broader business-oriented start rather than the most prestige-driven finance track.
So if your goal is maximizing access to finance internships, alumni connections, and brand recognition, Berkeley has the edge. Cal Poly is still a credible option, but it tends to reward students who are willing to build their own path rather than step into an already well-developed finance recruiting network.
