Cal Poly or UC Davis for pre-vet?

UC Davis has the edge for pre-vet. It stands out because it has its own School of Veterinary Medicine, a dedicated Animal Science major with strong pre-vet overlap, and deep access to animal, research, and clinical settings right on or tied closely to campus.

The biggest differentiator is the veterinary ecosystem itself. At UC Davis, pre-vet students are in a place where veterinary medicine is a major institutional priority, which usually means more visible advising, more faculty doing animal and biomedical research, and more nearby opportunities to learn what the field actually looks like. Being connected to a campus with a vet school can make it easier to find shadowing, labs, and mentors who understand the path to vet school in detail.

Another advantage is breadth of animal-related opportunities. Davis is especially strong if you want exposure to livestock, equine, companion animals, wildlife, or public health angles within veterinary medicine. The campus and surrounding area support a lot of hands-on work, and that matters because vet school applicants need both academic preparation and substantial animal experience.

Cal Poly is still a very real contender because its learn-by-doing approach is excellent, especially in animal science and agriculture. Students often get practical experience early, and some people thrive in that more applied environment. But for a student choosing specifically on pre-vet preparation, UC Davis usually offers a deeper bench of specialized resources, connections, and infrastructure tied directly to veterinary medicine.

One practical note: at either school, what matters most is whether you can earn strong grades in the prerequisites, build sustained animal and veterinary experience, and form relationships with recommenders. UC Davis just tends to make more of those pre-vet pieces available in one place.
