UT Dallas vs University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for engineering: which is better?

I’m trying to decide between UT Dallas and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for engineering and keep seeing both mentioned as strong options.

Since I’m still narrowing down my list, I want to know which school is generally considered stronger for engineering overall, especially in terms of reputation and opportunities.

UIUC is more widely regarded as the stronger engineering school overall. Its College of Engineering has a longer-established national reputation, a larger and more visible research presence across engineering fields, and deeper name recognition with employers and graduate programs. For a student comparing overall prestige and breadth of opportunity in engineering, UIUC usually carries more weight.

One major differentiator is program depth. UIUC offers a very broad engineering ecosystem with highly developed departments, extensive lab infrastructure, and a large volume of research, design teams, and technical student organizations. That matters because it creates more ways to explore specialties, switch interests within engineering, and find faculty or project niches without the program feeling limited.

Another difference is employer visibility. UIUC has especially strong recruiting pipelines in engineering, with major companies regularly targeting the campus for internships and full-time roles. Its alumni network in technical fields is also unusually extensive, which can help with both first-job access and long-term credibility. UT Dallas has solid connections too, especially in the Texas tech corridor, but its engineering brand is not as broadly established at the same level.

Location cuts in a slightly different direction. UT Dallas benefits from being in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, which is a real advantage for regional internships and industry access during the school year. For students who want to build a career in Texas, that can be genuinely valuable. But if the question is which school is seen as stronger for engineering overall in reputation and opportunities, UIUC comes out ahead.
