Is UT Dallas or the University of San Francisco worth the money for an undergraduate degree?

I’m trying to decide between UT Dallas and the University of San Francisco, and the cost difference is pretty big. I want to make a smart choice because I don’t want to take on a lot of debt if the degree value isn’t there.

I’m mainly wondering whether either school is generally considered worth the price for an undergrad degree.

For most students, UT Dallas is easier to justify financially for an undergraduate degree, especially if the price gap is large. It is a public research university with a strong reputation in fields like computer science, engineering, business, and pre-med pathways, and it is known for offering solid outcomes without a private-school price tag. The University of San Francisco can make sense, but usually only if the net cost is close enough that its location and academic experience are worth paying for.

UT Dallas tends to fit students who are thinking carefully about return on investment and want a school with serious academics, growing research activity, and access to the Dallas-Fort Worth job market. It is especially appealing for students in practical or high-demand majors, where employers know the school and recruiting pipelines are fairly established. If your concern is avoiding debt while still getting a respected degree, UTD has a strong case.

USF tends to make more sense for students who specifically want a smaller private university feel in San Francisco, with closer faculty access, a Jesuit educational environment, and direct proximity to internships in the city. That can be valuable for students interested in certain nonprofit, social justice, business, healthcare, or city-based opportunities. But the key phrase is specifically want, because those benefits do not automatically outweigh a much higher cost.

In blunt financial terms, an undergraduate degree from USF is not usually worth taking on substantially more debt than UT Dallas for most majors. USF is a legitimate university, but it is not one that typically carries such a strong national payoff that a big extra bill is easy to defend. If the difference is modest, then campus fit and location might tip things. If the difference is major, UT Dallas is usually the more sensible investment.
