Which has a better return on investment: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or NYU?

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus location-driven access. UIUC is typically far less expensive, especially for Illinois residents, while NYU often costs much more but places students directly in New York with unusually easy access to internships during the school year, especially in finance, media, arts, and some corporate roles. For pure return on investment, UIUC usually comes out ahead unless NYU gives you substantial aid or you are targeting fields where being in New York during college creates a real advantage.

UIUC has a strong reputation in engineering, computer science, business, and other technical fields, and that matters because those majors often lead to high starting salaries without private-school debt. Its large public-school price structure usually makes the earnings-to-cost equation look better.

NYU can still be worth it, but the math is less forgiving. Its biggest ROI strength is not that it is automatically better paid across the board, but that students can build networks and internships earlier and more continuously because of the location. In areas like investment banking, entertainment, luxury retail, public relations, and certain arts paths, that access can convert into strong outcomes. The issue is that those benefits do not always justify the extra debt if you are paying near full price.

Major matters more than the school name alone here. A UIUC engineering or CS degree often gives exceptional value.

So in a broad, practical ROI comparison, UIUC is usually the better value. NYU becomes the smarter financial bet only in narrower cases where the program fit is strong and your net price is much closer than the sticker price suggests.
