UMass Amherst vs American University for government internships: which is better for political science students?

American University has the clearer edge for government internships in politics and public service. Its Washington, D.C. location matters a lot because students can intern during the semester with federal agencies, congressional offices, think tanks, advocacy groups, and nonprofits without needing to leave campus for a full term. That kind of access makes it easier to build experience early and keep stacking internships over multiple semesters.

At American, political science and related majors are tightly connected to D.C.-based experiential learning. Students often combine coursework with part-time internships, attend events with policymakers and practitioners, and tap into an alumni network concentrated in government and public affairs. For a student who wants politics to be part of weekly life rather than just a summer plan, that is a real structural advantage.

UMass Amherst can still produce strong outcomes, especially for students who are proactive and willing to use summers, semester programs in D.C., or state-level opportunities in Massachusetts. It has a solid political science department, and students can absolutely reach government work from there. But the key difference is that those opportunities usually require more planning and travel, rather than being woven into the ordinary semester in the same way.

Another practical point is convenience. At American, it is much easier to fit informational interviews, networking events, Hill visits, and recurring internship hours into a normal week.
