For finance careers, is UMass Amherst or NYU the better college choice?
I’m a high school junior trying to compare these two schools for finance recruiting and career outcomes. I know both have strong reputations, but I’m mostly trying to understand which one is generally viewed as better for getting into finance jobs after college.
I’m not looking at cost or campus life as much right now, just the overall value of each school for a finance career.

NYU is the better choice for finance careers. Its location in New York City, the strength of Stern, and the sheer density of alumni and employer access make it much more directly plugged into finance recruiting than UMass Amherst.
The biggest difference is recruiting proximity. NYU students are in the same city as investment banks, asset managers, private equity firms, hedge funds, and corporate finance offices, which makes networking, in-semester internships, coffee chats, and employer events far easier to do consistently. For finance, that matters because so much of hiring happens through repeated contact and early pipeline-building, not just submitting applications.
The second differentiator is brand within finance itself. NYU Stern is one of the most recognized undergraduate business programs in the country, and employers in banking, sales and trading, investment management, and related fields know exactly what they are getting. UMass Amherst can absolutely place students into finance, especially strong self-starters, but it does not carry the same immediate signal on Wall Street.
Alumni access is another real edge. NYU has a very large and active network in New York finance, and that often translates into more informational interviews, student clubs with stronger recruiting pipelines, and a clearer path into competitive internships. At UMass Amherst, students can still reach those outcomes, but they usually need to be more proactive in building connections beyond the campus ecosystem.
UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School of Management is well regarded and can be a solid path into corporate finance, accounting, and some front-office roles, so it is not a weak option. But if the question is which school is more favorably viewed overall for launching a finance career, especially in high-finance recruiting, NYU has the stronger position.
