San Diego State vs Texas A&M for engineering: which is better overall?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and engineering depth versus location and lifestyle. Texas A&M has a much larger, more established engineering ecosystem, with more majors, more research infrastructure, and a wider national employer pipeline. San Diego State gives you access to the San Diego region and a more coastal setting, but for engineering specifically it does not have the same overall breadth or name recognition as Texas A&M.

On program reputation, Texas A&M is the stronger option. Its College of Engineering is one of the more widely recognized public engineering schools in the country, and that matters when recruiters are sorting resumes across states.

For internships and recruiting, Texas A&M again has the advantage in volume. SDSU does benefit from being in Southern California, which can be helpful for internships in defense, biotech, telecom, and regional engineering firms, but the recruiting machine is not on the same level.

For respect after graduation, both degrees are valid and can absolutely lead to good outcomes, but a Texas A&M engineering degree is more likely to be immediately recognized across the country. SDSU can be a smart pick if you know you want to build your career in Southern California and you value staying close to that market. In that narrower case, location can close some of the gap.

If the question is simply which school is stronger overall for engineering, Texas A&M is the clearer answer. SDSU becomes most compelling when cost, California location, or personal fit is important enough to outweigh the difference in engineering reputation and recruiting reach.
