San Diego State vs UCLA for business: which is the better choice for undergrad career opportunities?

I’m trying to decide between SDSU and UCLA for business and keep going back and forth. I’m mostly thinking about which school would give me stronger opportunities after graduation, especially for internships, networking, and getting a job in business.

I know both schools have good reputations, but I’m not sure how much the name of the school matters versus the actual business program and location.

For undergrad career opportunities in business, UCLA usually opens more doors across a wider range of industries, especially if you want access to highly competitive internships, larger national recruiting pipelines, and a broad alumni network. Its location in Los Angeles matters, and so does the UCLA name. If your question is mostly about reach and brand strength right after graduation, UCLA has the edge.

UCLA makes the most sense for a student who wants optionality. Even though UCLA does not have a traditional undergraduate business major in the same way some business schools do, students still place well into business careers through economics, business economics, math/econ, statistics, communications, and student organizations tied to consulting, entrepreneurship, investing, and marketing. The network is large, active, and visible in major markets, which helps with internships during the school year as well as full-time recruiting.

SDSU is very appealing for a student who wants a more direct undergraduate business experience and may value a practical, professionally oriented environment. Its business program is well known in Southern California, and it has strong local connections, especially in San Diego. For marketing, accounting, real estate, management, and regional corporate recruiting, SDSU can translate into very real outcomes, particularly for students who are proactive and want to build a career in Southern California.

Where SDSU can be especially attractive is if you care about hands-on business coursework earlier, a campus culture that feels less intensely pre-professional, or significantly lower cost. If SDSU is much more affordable for you, that changes the equation. In business, graduating with less debt can matter a lot, and SDSU can absolutely lead to strong internships and jobs, especially if you use the local network well.

So the answer is not that one school has opportunities and the other does not. It is that UCLA tends to offer more national-level visibility and broader access, while SDSU offers a solid business pathway with stronger value for students targeting Southern California and wanting a more straightforward business major experience. If cost is reasonably similar and your priority is maximizing internship and recruiting reach, UCLA is the stronger pick.
