Tulane vs Harvard: which is better value for college cost?

I’m trying to compare Tulane and Harvard mainly from a value-for-money standpoint, not just prestige. I know the sticker prices are very different, but I’m thinking about how much each school can actually end up costing after aid and what kind of return students get from the degree.

I’m a high school junior starting to narrow down my list, and I want to understand which one tends to be the better financial decision overall.

For value, Harvard is often the stronger financial deal for students who qualify for need-based aid, even though its sticker price is very high. Tulane can be a good value for students who win large merit scholarships or who specifically want its academic and campus environment, but it is less likely than Harvard to beat its published price purely through need-based aid.

Harvard tends to make the most financial sense for a student from a low- or middle-income household whose family would not comfortably pay full price. Its aid is need-based and often substantial, and Harvard also has a very strong track record for post-graduation opportunities across many fields. That combination matters because value is not just about prestige, but about net cost relative to the options a degree opens up. For many admitted students, Harvard is not the expensive choice people assume.

Tulane fits a different kind of student financially. It can be attractive for a student with a strong enough profile to receive merit aid. If your family is unlikely to qualify for much need-based aid, Tulane sometimes becomes competitive only if merit money significantly reduces the bill. Without major merit aid, Tulane’s cost can be hard to justify purely on price when compared with a school like Harvard that may meet need more aggressively.

If you are likely to qualify for need-based aid, Harvard often delivers better value than its sticker price suggests. If you are closer to full-pay and think you could be in the running for substantial merit aid, Tulane is the one more likely to discount tuition that way. The smartest comparison is each school’s net price calculator, because for these two schools, value can flip quickly depending on income and scholarship chances.
