Should I choose the University of Alabama or Florida State University for accounting?

I’m trying to decide between these two schools and accounting is the main thing I want to study. Both seem like solid options, but I’m not sure which one would be the better fit for an accounting major.

I want to pick the school that would give me the strongest accounting program and the best path into internships and a first job after college.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Alabama tends to offer a very structured, recruiter-heavy path into accounting, while Florida State gives you strong access too but with a different feel and location advantage through Tallahassee and the broader Florida market. For accounting specifically, Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Business is especially well known for feeding students into public accounting firms, and its MAcc pipeline and recruiting culture are a real plus. Florida State’s business school is also respected, and being in the state capital can help with government, consulting, and regional business connections.

If your top priority is the strongest straight-line path to internships, CPA-track preparation, and public accounting recruiting, I would lean Alabama. It has a strong reputation in accounting circles, a large business-focused student ecosystem, and a track record of placing students with major firms. In practical terms, that often means more visible recruiting infrastructure, more accounting-specific student organizations and events, and a clearer on-campus pipeline.

Florida State is still a credible option, especially if you want to build your career in Florida after graduation. That can matter more than people think in accounting, because firms often hire regionally and alumni presence helps. FSU may be especially appealing if you prefer Tallahassee, want access to Florida agencies and employers, or see yourself staying in that state long term.

I would also weigh cost very seriously. In accounting, minimizing debt can be a smart move because both schools can get you to the same profession, and your internships, grades, leadership, and CPA progress will matter a lot. If one school is meaningfully cheaper, that could outweigh a modest difference in program strength.

Between the two, Alabama has the edge for accounting itself. Florida State becomes more compelling when the price is better or when you know you want to build your network and career in Florida.
