Is the University of Minnesota or University of Illinois better for finance careers?
I’m trying to choose between these two schools and want to make the smarter pick for finance recruiting. I know both have strong business programs, but I’m mainly wondering which one has the better reputation and network for getting finance jobs after college.
I’m a junior/senior trying to think ahead about internships and first jobs, so I want to understand which school tends to be stronger for finance careers overall.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Illinois tends to give you a broader national recruiting platform in business, while Minnesota can be a very strong route if you want to build a finance career in Minneapolis-St. Paul. For finance specifically, UIUC usually has the stronger overall reputation with employers, a larger out-of-state alumni footprint, and more visibility in competitive recruiting pipelines. Minnesota’s Carlson School is well respected and places well, but its network is more regionally concentrated.
If your definition of “better for finance careers” is the school that opens more doors across different markets, Illinois has the edge. Gies is widely known, the alumni base is large, and students often target a wider mix of corporate finance, banking, consulting-adjacent roles, and Chicago opportunities. Chicago matters here because it gives UIUC students a major nearby finance market with heavy alumni presence and frequent employer connections.
Minnesota is not a weak choice at all, especially through Carlson. In the Twin Cities, Carlson has real strength with corporate finance, banking, asset management, and Fortune 500 connections because Minneapolis is a serious business hub. If you think you may want to stay in Minnesota after graduation, that local network can be extremely valuable and sometimes more practical than a broader but less concentrated alumni base.
For corporate finance and strong placement in the Upper Midwest, Minnesota can compete very well. Between the two, I’d lean University of Illinois for pure finance recruiting strength and network breadth, unless you already know the Twin Cities is where you want to build your career.
