For admissions offices, neither school is likely to produce a dramatic prestige advantage on its own. Graduate programs and professional schools will care much more about your grades, rigor, recommendations, internships, and results than about choosing Rutgers over Fordham. Rutgers may carry more weight in academic and research-oriented settings because it is a major flagship public research university, while Fordham may have a slightly stronger perception in certain white-collar circles because it is a well-known private Jesuit university in NYC.

For employers, the answer depends a bit on region and industry. Rutgers tends to have stronger mass recognition across more fields, especially STEM, public sector, healthcare, and large corporate pipelines in the Mid-Atlantic. Fordham has good employer visibility in New York and can punch above its size in business-related recruiting because of its location and network.

So if you mean overall prestige and name recognition across the widest range of admissions offices and employers, Rutgers probably has the edge. If you mean a more private-school, NYC-centered brand that may sound more elite in certain conversations, Fordham has that appeal. Neither is in a completely different tier from the other, but Rutgers is the safer answer for broader recognition.
