Temple is usually the easier place to navigate as a true daily commuter, especially if you want a campus and student life built around public transit and students who come and go throughout the day. Its North Philadelphia location puts it directly on SEPTA regional rail, subway, and bus lines, and the campus is compact enough that getting from a train stop to class is straightforward. Rutgers can work well for commuters too, but the New Brunswick experience is more spread out and often depends on campus buses between College Avenue, Busch, Livingston, and Cook/Douglass.

Transportation is the biggest separator. At Temple, many commuters can arrive by one train or subway line and walk to most academic buildings without much internal transit. At Rutgers New Brunswick, even after you get to the city, you may still need to factor in university bus time, traffic, and the reality that classes, clubs, and services may be on different campuses.

The day-to-day feel is also different. Temple has a more urban, in-and-out rhythm, so being a commuter tends to feel normal rather than secondary to residential life. Rutgers has a much larger flagship-school atmosphere with more moving parts, which can be exciting, but it also means a commuter has to plan more carefully to avoid long gaps, bus rides, or a late trip home.

For student life, Rutgers offers broader scale, more school-spirit energy, and a bigger menu of clubs and events simply because the university is so large. The catch is that commuter students sometimes have to work harder there to stay engaged between campuses. Temple’s student life can be easier to access in short windows between classes, since more of the action is concentrated in one main campus area and many students are balancing city commuting in similar ways.

If your priority is a smoother daily routine with fewer logistical headaches, Temple has the edge. If you are willing to deal with a more complicated commute in exchange for a larger university environment, Rutgers brings more variety but less day-to-day simplicity for most commuters.
