American University vs Tufts for research opportunities: which is better for undergraduates?

The biggest practical tradeoff is research style: Tufts offers a more traditional campus-based undergraduate research environment across many disciplines, while American University’s strongest opportunities are often tied to Washington, DC itself through policy, social science, and nonprofit or government-facing work. If you want early access to faculty-led lab or campus research, Tufts usually has the clearer edge. If your definition of research includes applied policy projects, think tank work, and faculty connections that extend into DC institutions, American becomes more competitive.

At Tufts, undergraduates are known to get involved in research relatively early, especially because the school is strongly undergraduate-focused despite having graduate programs. Faculty research is a visible part of the academic culture, and students can often join projects by taking classes with professors, reaching out directly, or using formal undergraduate research programs during the semester or summer. That tends to make the path more straightforward for a proactive student who is not walking in with preexisting connections.

American has real undergraduate research options too, particularly in political science, international relations, public affairs, sociology, psychology, and environmental fields. The difference is that a lot of its most distinctive opportunities blur the line between research, internships, and applied project work. For some students that is a huge advantage, but if you specifically want faculty lab-style or campus-centered research from the start, the process can feel a bit less centralized than at Tufts.

For a student who is proactive but not already connected, Tufts is probably the more reliable place to build research experience early and directly with professors. American can be excellent, especially if your interests line up with DC-based policy and social science work, but Tufts is the safer pick if your main question is simple undergraduate access to faculty research.
