University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs Rutgers for computer engineering: which is better for undergrad?

UIUC has the edge for undergraduate computer engineering. Its ECE program is one of the school’s signature strengths, the curriculum is especially deep in both hardware and computing systems, and employers recruit very heavily there for semiconductor, embedded systems, software, and research-oriented roles.

One big difference is the academic structure. At UIUC, computer engineering sits inside a very established ECE department with broad upper-level options in areas like computer architecture, VLSI, embedded systems, networking, machine learning, and operating systems. That makes it easier to build either a hardware-leaning or software-leaning path without feeling boxed in. Rutgers has solid engineering and computing, but UIUC’s course depth and the scale of its ECE offerings are harder to match.

Recruiting is another separator. UIUC benefits from a national reputation in engineering, and its location in a major public research university creates a strong pipeline to large tech companies, chip firms, defense contractors, and graduate programs. Rutgers students do get access to the Northeast job market, which is a real advantage for internships during the school year, but UIUC tends to draw more concentrated on-campus attention specifically for computer engineering.

Research access is strong at both, but UIUC again stands out because of how central ECE research is to the campus. Undergrads can get involved in labs tied to computing hardware, AI systems, robotics, and communications, and there is simply a larger ecosystem of faculty and projects. For a student considering grad school, that breadth matters.

The main reason someone would still choose Rutgers is value or geography. If Rutgers is much cheaper for you, or being near New York and New Jersey employers matters a lot, that can absolutely justify the choice. But on curriculum strength, CE-specific opportunities, and national recruiting power, UIUC is the stronger option.
