Michigan State or University of Maryland for internship opportunities?

The biggest practical difference is location: Maryland gives you much easier access to internships during the school year because it sits near Washington, DC, while Michigan State is more dependent on summer recruiting or internships that require travel. For students who want to work part-time during the semester in government, policy, nonprofits, media, consulting, or tech-adjacent roles, Maryland has a real geographic advantage. MSU still has strong career support and a large alumni network, but its East Lansing setting makes frequent in-person semester internships less convenient.

At Maryland, students can tap into employers in College Park, DC, northern Virginia, and nearby Maryland suburbs. That matters because many organizations hire interns who can commute a few days a week, and UMD students are positioned to do that much more easily.

Michigan State does well with employer connections too, especially through its broad alumni base, business recruiting, education, communications, supply chain, and agriculture-related fields. If your internships are more likely to happen in the summer, or if you are targeting large companies that recruit nationally rather than local semester roles, MSU can still work very well. You can absolutely build strong experience there, but it often takes more planning around summers, career fairs, and relocation.

One important nuance is major. Maryland’s proximity is a particularly big plus for fields tied to federal agencies, research institutions, think tanks, and DC-area companies. MSU can be very attractive for students entering industries where on-campus recruiting and national employer pipelines matter more than local access.

For pure internship access, especially during the academic year, I’d lean University of Maryland. Michigan State is a solid option, but Maryland’s location creates more day-to-day opportunities to gain experience while classes are in session.
