University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs RPI for computer science: how do they compare academically and for recruiting?

UIUC has the clearer edge for computer science overall, especially if you care about breadth in the curriculum, scale of research and labs, and the depth of recruiting that comes from being one of the most established CS departments in the country. RPI is still a serious technical school with strong outcomes, but in a head-to-head comparison for CS, UIUC is the more powerful name academically and professionally.

One concrete difference is the academic ecosystem. UIUC’s computer science department offers a much wider spread of upper-level electives and specialized areas, including systems, AI, theory, graphics, databases, security, and interdisciplinary options tied to engineering and data science. That matters because students often change interests once they start taking real CS classes, and UIUC gives you more room to explore without running into a narrow course menu.
