Among students and employers, the practical reality is that both schools are viewed as high-quality, selective, academically demanding places. Outside of circles that follow higher education closely, many people see them as peers, with UIUC maybe carrying slightly more overall academic cachet and Purdue having especially strong recognition in technical and engineering-heavy spaces. For a college list, it makes more sense to compare them by major strength, cost, campus environment, and career outcomes than by prestige alone.
